Thiruvadirai kali – Thiruvadirai kali recipe in Tamil, with full video and step-by-step pictorial instructions. Thiruvadirai kali is made using rice, moong dal, and jaggery as the main ingredients.
This festival Thiruvadirai is favored for Lord Shiva, on the day of Thiruvadirai star in Marghazhi (November-December)and is a festival of great importance. Thiruvadirai kali is an offering to Lord Natraja on the occasion of Arudra dharshan. We make Kali on this day along with the Thiruvathirai Kootu | Thalagam or 7 kari kootu.
My mom and grandmother make delicious kali but somehow during my childhood, I never liked it. Later after marriage, I developed an interest in this. But to date, I don’t like the combo of sweet kali and the savory kootu.
Traditionally Thiruvadirai kali is made in a brass uruli, called Vengala panai in Tamil. But now due to time constraints, we are making it in a pressure cooker. Trust me, this recipe is a no-fail thiruvadirai kali recipe.
