Butter milk 1 and 1/2 cups Coconut 2 tblsp Cucumber seeds 1/2 cup Green chili 1-2 Whole Black pepper 1/4 tsp Salt as needed To temper Coconut oil 2 tsp Mustard seeds 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds 1/4 tsp Red chili 2 Curry leaves few Asafoetida a pinch
Method:
- Slit the big cucumber into two.
- Scoop the cucumber seeds from the cucumber. I took one large cucumber. Teh cucumber you can use for raita.
- Check whether it is not bitter, sometimes cucumber will be bitter and will spoil the entire gravy.
- In a mixie grind the cucumber seeds, along with coconut,black pepper and green chili into a fine paste.
- Meanwhile keep the buttermilk ready. I took 1 cup yogurt and whisked it without lumps.
- Added 1/4 cup of water to this.
- Add salt to taste.
- Strain the ground cucumber seed mixture and add it to the buttermilk. You can add 1/4 cup of water while straining the mixture.
- The consistency of the tambli will be thin.
- I tried the tambli both ways, without straining and also in this way. I liked it both the ways.
- Now temper the mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves, red chili and asafoetida in coconut oil.
- Add it to the buttermilk mixture.
- Mix well.
- Cucumber seeds tambli is ready to serve.
- It is generally served with plain hot rice.
- We had with rice, thengai thogayal and beetroot curry.
- Check the cucumber before you proceed, as it may be bitter some times.
- The cucumber seeds tambli will be a thin gravy.
